Space Invaders may be a good simple example of the risk/reward structure inherent to games, but I’d also like to point you to an article on Risk and Reward in Super Meat Boy and other games by Edmund McMillen on his blog:

The diagrams make it very clear how risk/reward operates within games and how a tight pairing can make for an exciting game.
